Really, it was shocking news, I was heart ?broken when Teresa Chang told me: “Jim, do you know, Richard passed away?” I couldn’t believe it was true; how could it be? Later, I got Susan Lin’s mail describing this sorrowful news. Definitely, our beloved brother, Richard left us. We would never see him in the club with his kind, smiling face. Richard Wu was one of my best friends in FYTC and In TEATC. It was the second meeting since I joined FYTC in 1998. Richard just sat beside me. At that time, I still didn’t understand what the Toastmasters was. He kindly introduced the details of TMs, and explained how the meetings in TMs processed.
Over
14 years, Richard had been dedicated for TMs. He has served as the EVP
and the president of FYTC, the Charter President of TEATC, and he had
served as the Area B2 Governor, and the Division B Governor. During his
tenures of the positions, he had showed his decisive talent on his
leadership. Whenever and whatever the matters came, he always quickly
made the final decisions, and he always stuck to his decisions; no
matter what happen or how difficult the situations were. Besides Richard had served many important positions of TMs, he also had helped or supported chartering many new clubs, such as Ta ?chia, NCBTC, Fluency, TEATC….. He also had helped support many TMs activities. He had taught English in a jail; he had conducted the Speech Craft Program in Asia University. When Asia University students heard the sad news that Richard passed away, they were in tears. They said they wouldn’t believe it was true. During the period of hosting the Round Table in FYTC, he got a creative idea. He hoped to have a club whose meeting roles fulfilled their jobs with impromptu way; all the meeting role didn’t need to pre ?prepare before the meetings. That’s why he created an ingenious club, TEATC. The meeting roles in TEATC don’t need to be prepared before the meetings. All the roles are produced by lucky draws. The meeting roles need to fulfill their job impromptu. Richard was a one of my best friends. Just a week before I retired from my office, Richard, Charles Chan and Peter Fang visited the Port of Taichung. He looked so strong, young and optimistic. Last spring, we heard that he needed to miss from TMs for a long period. Although I got his E ?mail once, I never saw him again. I did not realize that it the way he said “Goodbye!” When I heard the sorrowful news from Teresa Chang and Susan Lin, my heart was broken. But I strongly believe that Richard’s spirit will always live with us. He loved TMs so much. God bless Richard and his family.
