“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Today we are honored to have invited a high ranking officer to make a speech for us. He is not only a dedicated toastmaster but also a role model for all of us. I’m sure you all know who I am talking about. Let’s put our hands together in welcoming my dearest friend, Richard Wu……….”

Remembering back ten years ago, being a Toastmaster of the meeting, I used to introduce Richard that way. I often tell my non ?toastmasters friends about a special person I know in FYTC.

If I have to use a word to describe Richard, it would have to be “righteousness”. Nowadays, it is very rare to find someone in the government agency that is not even slightly affected by the corrupted bureaucracy. Many people think that knowing a police officer means having access to lots of convenience. However, it is contrary to the belief in Richard’s case. For instance, if you get a traffic ticket, many people would probably choose to give it to their police friends in the hope that the ticket would vanish into thin air. Have you ever thought where the ticket has disappeared to? Well, most officers would take your ticket off the record to avoid the fine, but Richard would choose to pay the fine for you to abide by the law and do a friend a favor at the same time. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Well, that’s Richard.

Richard and I shared an extraordinary experience together. In spring, 2002, I had the privilege of representing the central division to compete in the national prepared speech contest.

Richard was the president of FYTC at that time. He reached out his helping hand and supported me throughout the long and difficult journey to achieving my championship. He was willing to go through the trouble of putting together rehearsal after rehearsal for me to practice in front of our members and providing me with ideas to excel my speech. He did everything not for his own benefit, but to help a friend succeed. He had shown me what toastmaster spirit was all about and he was the one who made me realize what the true meaning of toastmasters was. And I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

I really regret the fact that I had to write a eulogy about Richard under such circumstances. However, knowing Richard being a faithful Christian, I am sure now he is in God’s kingdom and looking down upon us. And not being able to say good ?bye to Richard somehow makes me feel regretful. So, I would like to say to Richard up high in heaven,

“Thanks for making a difference in my life. Farewell, my friend. May you rest in peace”.
