Featuring Toastmasters Club District 67 Public Relations Officer, Dr. Webster Kiang.

Emily: Hi, ICRT I am Emily David.  This is “Music to Go”, Joining me in this afternoon, in our studio today is Webster Kiang (江偉平) from Toastmasters Club.  Hi.

Webster : Hi, Happy Valentine's Day

Emily: Jah! Happy Valentine's Day.  Thank you so much for joining us today. Now, before we get into the details of how to join the Toastmasters Club, we want to talk about what exactly the club is about?  So, can you give us a brief background what is the Toastmasters about?

Webster: Dr. Smedley established The Toastmasters Club in 1924.  His purpose was to trying to get a group of people together, so they can train each other to improve their oral presentation skills. Later on, they also improved upon in training the leadership skills.

Emily: Hm.. This isn't limited to just English. or Mandarin. It's done in ….

Webster: In Taiwan, we have an very interesting phenomenon, we incorporated the manual and used in English Club, Mandarin Club, Japanese club, Taiwanese Club, ( Hakka , , and bilingual clubs ) and six different languages.

Emily: Wahl! That is awesome, only in Taiwan?
Webster Yes.

Emily:

All right, Okay, who are the members of the Toastmasters club? If you can describe, generally.

Webster Every body with 18 years of age can join toastmasters.  Once upon a time, there was a ten year old, joining us, he speaks fluently. Normally, we have from college students, to professionals, to housewives, to retired people; everybody can join.

Emily: So, do you have to meet certain criteria before you become a member?

Webster Just if you are interested in improving your presentation skills: oral, speaking, communication skills.

Emily: That sounds pretty simple. It sounds good to me. So, what are the ten-point features that people can learn?  So, just to make sure our listener understands.

Webster People come to our club to make friends.
Emily: Meeting friends.

Webster People come from community; they can meet people from other communities. And also, we have about fifteen corporation clubs.  If you are interested about that company, you can go to that company Toastmasters club and meet their people there.

Emily: Okay, so, what is the environment in a toastmasters club meeting?

Webster

Our club-meeting environment is learning-by-doing.  We have people have no speaking experience at all to come and to present their first speech.  The first speech is trying to help them to eliminate their stage fright. We are trying to encourage them to learn how to speak.  After the speech, we have more senior member to give one-to-one positives. When we say positive, it means mostly encouragement, and only with a bit of suggestions for improvement in the next speech.

Emily: I am sure that there are a lot of people interested in improving their public speaking skills and their presentation skills.  How do you help them overcome for the very first time? You know they are going to be afraid.  How do you convince people?  How do you make them feel comfortable to actually do it?

Webster The Toastmasters had seventy years of experience. In their basic training manual, there are ten modules. The first module is called the Ice Breaker. This fist module suggests the beginner to talk about the things they are most familiar with.  What will be the most familiar subject, that is himself.  The purpose is to help eliminate the stage fright.

Emily:

Wahl! It sounds great.  What are the tips one can learn in your club?

Webster The speaking tips:  To get the audience to pay attention to you, to understand you, to believe in you, and to remember what you said. There are sort of tips taught in our club. Other examples are introducing the variety of voices. One can practice to increase or decrease the pitch, the speed.  Also one can learn to use the “pause” to draw the attention of the audience.

In radio station, variety of voices is most effective.  In face the audience situations; one can learn the use of gestures, body movements, and eye contact to add emphasis.  These are all the tips, our member can learn t gradually improve their speech.

Emily:

Wahl! Those who are listening with us may not know there is so much involves in a speech.  How often does the Toastmasters club meet?

Webster Most of the one hundred and four clubs in Taiwan meet twice a month.  That means once every two weeks.  There are a few meets every week.  The typical length is two hours long.  In each gathering, the program is very intensive.  There are about ten to fifteen “roles” – that means ten-to fifteen people will get a chance to get on the stage and practice speaking from two to five minutes.

Emily: Really, that many people?

Webster For prepared speeches, a person really has to prepare beforehand.

Emily: Make your five minutes count right?

Webster Right.

Emily:

Okay, what sort of thing the toastmasters learn?

Webster After one completes ten prepared speeches, he or she gets a reward.  He or she will get a designation of CTM, which means Competent Toastmaster.

Emily: Ha! Ha! I am now being designated competent.

Webster After the CTM, you continue to practice, for each additional ten speeches, you will be designated as ATM, i.e. Advanced Toastmaster – Bronze, Silver or Gold titles.

Emily: Can you tell me what's beyond that, the ultimate title?

Webster The ultimate title is called DTM – stands for Distinguished Toastmaster. There is also some leadership training involved before one gets that title.

Emily:

There you go.  I am definitely go for that.  Are there any benefits to toastmasters?

Did you say that is a place, a lot of people network?

Webster I like to mention an example.  One of our member, peter Wu.  After he completes ten speeches, he felt more confident himself.  AT work, he participated discussions with foreign consultants confidently.  When an overseas position become vacant, he was promoted to that job, because his boss thinks he can handle better than other colleagues.

Emily: So, we already talked about the different levels for achievements. One has to complete ten speeches to receive a title.  Can you tell me how to select the Title for each speech?

Webster We suggest following the manual sequentially.  The second project is to organize your speech.  It is suggested that for any length speech, we need to have three parts: a strong opening, a supportive body, and a strong conclusion. To begin organizing a speech.

Emily: So, you pretty much cover any topic?

Webster The first ten speeches in the basic manual only covers the fundamental elements about the mechanics of a speech.  After the basic speeches; there are fifteen Advanced Manuals – they cover topics such as: The professional speeches; the entertaining speeches, the persuasive speeches, and technical presentations. Each advanced manual has five speech projects related to that topic.

Emily:

After people speak, how many people give them feedback? Does it happen right after the speech?

Webster As I mentioned earlier, we provide a positive learning environment.  If we have five speakers tonight, we will assign five evaluators.  Each speech is evaluated on a specifically assigned senior member, who will concentrate the entire evening to one speech.  He will first write a written feedback, and then give a verbal summary of the feedback.

Emily:

Do you have any idea, how many members we have in the Taiwan part?

Webster We have about three thousand active paid members now in Taiwan.  The accumulative members since fifty years ago may add to more than ten thousand members.

Emily:

Auh, Wahl!  All right, that's a lot. You guides don't mind more members, right?  Yeh…..

Webster The purpose of this interview is trying to get people to interest in improving your speaking skills, so we suggest you to visit a club near you to observe for yourselves. Our District Governor offered, in his first interview at ICRT, that listener from ICRT may visit any Toastmasters clubs for free, free of admissions for two times. How to find a club?  We suggest you to look at our web site.

Emily:

Ohm… Wonderful. So, you will be able to observe a Toastmasters club, for free. Right?

Webster How to get to our web site:  it is, www.toastmasters.org.tw!  Spell as toastmasters.

Emily: Right! Webster Thank you too! Emily! Thank you, everybody.

Emily:
